Our Members

If you’re 55+ and live on South Whidbey, you could be the perfect fit for our village, which helps members age in place with confidence and connection. South Whidbey at Home serves neighbors from Clinton to Greenbank—and your annual membership opens the door to social gatherings, educational programs, and a community that looks out for one another.

As part of the village, you can lend a hand when you’re able and begin (or continue) building your support network to age in place in this wonderful community! We have 2 types of membership:
Full Membership & Social Membership.

Social Membership is for people ages 55+ living on South Whidbey who are primarily interested in creating and fostering connections within the community. Social members have access to social and educational activities, interest groups such as our solo agers group and writers group, and can request two volunteer tasks per year. Social membership is $150 per year for an individual or couple. Scholarships are available if that is a hardship.

Full Access Membership: In addition to all of the opportunities available to Social members, Full Access members benefit from a network of volunteers for support. Our call managers help you identify the right services, then connect you with volunteers who provide the small but essential help that makes independent living possible—on‑island rides (not just medical), light gardening, tech help, walking buddies, short‑term pet care, friendly visits or calls, minor household repairs, and more. Full Access membership is $240 per year for an individual and an additional $120 to add another member in the same household. Scholarships are available if that is a hardship.

Joining South Whidbey at Home means joining a village that’s here for you, today and in the years ahead.

About Volunteering

South Whidbey at Home volunteers can be people of any age who don’t mind helping an older neighbor. They are generous people who are happy to share their time and skills. They also understand the concept of “paying it forward” and want to ensure that SW@Home will be there for them whenever—if ever—they (or their older family members) need it.

What does a SW@Home volunteer do?

We know that our members are likely to need help with minor home repairs, emergency pet care, a ride to church, meditation circle, or a health professional, help in the garden, assistance with new technology, a neighborly visit, or a daily phone check in. Here’s a list of the services we currently offer through our volunteers. Our application asks the kinds of services you’re willing and able to offer. We expect most requests would take less than two hours to fulfill.

But what else would you like to offer?

Perhaps you like to read aloud, do an errand, or play a musical instrument? If you have a skill or talent that’s not listed, let us know. We’re open to suggestions that fall within our mission parameters. Our volunteers will not be doing health-related or personal-care work.

When do SW@Home volunteers work? That’s up to you.

You tell us when you’re available and the days or times of day you prefer to volunteer. If a member request comes in that seems to fit your preferences, we’ll ask by phone or email (your choice) if you’re willing or able to do it. You’ll confirm with the member and let us know afterward if you encountered any problems. Easy.

All SW@Home volunteers are vetted for the safety of our members and go through a short training session.

“As a volunteer I can say without doubt that my Mom was right: The gift is to the giver. My interactions with Members of SW@Home have been heartwarming and interesting. I think we miss the richness of the many lives lived by some of our most isolated seniors if we don't interact. It's all to easy to become invisible, and a simple conversation lifts the veil and shows us our common humanity.”
