South Whidbey at Home is modeled on
Beacon Hill Village
, a member-based nonprofit started in 2002 in a middle-class Boston neighborhood. The goal of the Beacon Hill Village was to help residents age in place, in the homes and community they loved, by fostering both independence and interdependence.
Beacon Hill has since been duplicated in hundreds of towns and neighborhoods across the US. Like most Villages, we offer three major benefits to full members—volunteer help for minor needs, connection to trusted businesses when paid professionals are required, and group social and educational activities. Supporting memberships are also available for those not yet in need of volunteer services.
Work on South Whidbey at Home started in March of 2015 and we opened on July 5, 2016. You can get a good idea of how the Village model works by looking at one of these short videos.
